There is no irrefutable evidence establishing that these men are really straight or gay. The actors' personas are dependent upon which sexual scripts-those that exist in the culture at large, their own intrapsychic ones, or those they can imagine in their everyday lives-in which they will be able to invest their energy. Drawing on John Gagnon and William Simon's theory of sexual scripts, this article shows that performers adopt a “persona” as a career script that functions as a sexual resume which establishes the kind of permission the actors give themselves to work in the gay pornography business, the repertoire of sex acts they will perform, and the image they wish to project as sexual performers.
